Controlled Wood Risk Assessment
|
The Board of FSC Australia has instigated a working party of experts selected by the three Chambers (Social, Environmental and Economic) to develop a formal Risk Assessment for ‘Controlled Wood’ in the Australian context. This Controlled Wood Risk Assessment will provide guidance to both companies and certification bodies seeking to identify risks in accordance with the FSC Standard for Company Evaluation of FSC Controlled Wood (FSC-STD-40-005 (Version 2-1)). Importantly, the treatment of high conservation values (HCV) in the Controlled Wood Risk Assessment is a precedent for the development of National Standard criteria for Principle 9 (dealing with HCV Forests) The six members of the working group are: Professor Rod Keenan Professor Jerry Vanclay Dr. Brendan Wintle Steve Mueck Dr. Anne Wallis Chris Loorham (Chair: Kevin O'Grady) |
Response to Stakeholder Submissions
After a consultation period of over 120 days, the FSC Australia Controlled Wood Risk Assessment Team (CWRAT) sent out an official response to the13 submissions received from a wide and representative range of stakeholders including members from all three of the FSC chambers. In their response to submissions, the Team has addressed generic points raised by a number of submissions as a single response rather than for each submission. This is because the same point was often raised in a different context. In response to some key points raised, the committee has sought clarification from FSC in Bonn before making its response. The response is now available to view.

Approved Controlled Wood Risk Assessment Matrix for Australia
After considerations of the submissions and advice from FSC International, the final matrix is now available to provide definitive guidance to Chain of Custody holders (and their certification bodies) who are seeking controlled wood from any Australian native forest or plantation that does not have FSC Forest Management Certification.
